Fariddudin Attar the druggist was born in Neishapur, Persia in 1120. This painting is inspired by the exuberance of his Mantiq-ut-Tair (Conference of the Birds) where “All true seekers should read from beginning to end every three years to see how far they have progressed; it is a divine mirror that reflects back to you transformed what you have come to understand”. (Eva de Vitray Meyerovitch). The Nightingale refuses to leave the “ocean of love for my Rose” to follow the Hoopoe’s quest for the Simurgh. The blue rose is an unattainable color, just like the oblivious and evanescent state of the rose towards the Nightingale’s “love”.

Gombrich called Alexander’s story “The Greatest Adventure of All”, whilst Ferdowsi the Persian tells of how Olympia’s bad breath was cured through the administering of the Alexander herb. The Malay Annals claims greatness through Raja Kida Hindi. Plutarch, in his “Life of Alexander” reports of a fragrant and most agreeable odour that exhaled from Alexander’s skin. Oliver Stone in his film tells us that our hero is not only great and fabulous, but also gay.

“Merkava” (Chariot) is the main battle tank used by the IDF. Four versions have been built and deployed since 1982. In the foreground, a child’s hand clutching a stone/rock is representative of the intifada, the first one which was declared by PLO in 1987 and then again in 2000. Done in a style of a graphic novel panel, the image includes a bubble of text, exclamation marks and folio. “92” years since the Balfour Declaration, the fall of the Ottoman Empire, and the beginning of displacement for an ancient people.

From Spartacus, the Tokyo Olympiad, to the Tiananmen Square protests, the fist, gloved or bare, either clenched, holding a weapon or placard, was always a symbol of uprising, dissatisfaction or revolt against an oppressive order. If the perception of history of Art could be simplistically linear, then perhaps each new movement would be a clenched fist painting exhibited in the face of the mainstream. The Kaabah, Islam’s holiest site is said to have been built by Prophet Abraham and his son Ismail, a reflection of Baitul Makmur, the place in heaven where angels pray. Apart from natural disasters and fire, the Kaabah had also been threatend by war and siege, such as that from Abrahah’s elephant army in ancient times, and more recently by people who believed that the Mahdi had come. The bloody 1979 siege was perhaps an allergic reaction towards the infidel contamination of Muslims of the modern world.
This painting shows a modern Hajjah from Malaysia facing the Kaabah. The white of the ihram garment and the black of the Kaabah both contrast and complement each other.
